Also known as Louis Treize, this distinct French period in history was heavily influenced by the fact that Louis XIII was a minor when he became king. His mother Marie dé Medici was a member of the House of Medici and oversaw the king’s reign until she was forcefully removed from power in 1617.

The style was heavily influenced by Marie’s Italian homeland and continued for several decades.

Louis XIII style furniture was typically large in scale, solidly built, and displayed carvings and turnings achieved on a lathe. Decorative motifs include cherubs, scrolling, frames, fruits, flowers, swags, and masks.
