  • (Louis Philippe Period) - Under the reign of King Louis Philippe, this period in design was influenced heavily by the personal taste of the King. This style was the first in French history to be driven more by the preferences of the growing French upper class, than by the French royalty. Unlike his predecessors from The House of Bourbon, Louis Philippe wore business attire and disliked formal robes traditionally worn by the monarchy. Furniture forms showed little change from the French Restoration period, but comfort and function became a greater priority. Still, in keeping with societal correctness, fashionable pieces of this time included round or oval Gueridon and other small occasional tables with marble tops. Moldings disappeared, with brass fittings and decorative motifs being rarely used.
