A handsome and high quality French 18th century Louis XV period Ebony and Ormolu Bureau Plat desk. This wonderful desk is raised by elegant cabriole legs with fine pierced wrap around Ormolu sabots and impressive and richly chased pierced foliate top mounts in an exceptional satin and burnished finish. At the arbalest frieze are three drawers with finely chased Ormolu handles and central keyhole escutcheon. The back is likewise decorated with faux drawers, and a leather top pull out at one side. At the top is a Gilt tooled leather fitted within an Ormolu gallery with foliate Ormolu mounts at each corner. All original gilt and warm patina throughout.

(Louis XV Period) - Also known as Louis Quinze or Rocaille, this style followed the traditions of French décor, until it took on a life and look of its own with decorations and motifs becoming more exuberant. The style was heavily influenced by the mistress of Louis XV, Madame de Pompadour, and marked the beginning of the Rococo movement. In his old age, from 1750 – 1774, Louis XV showed more signs of constraint in his design style and this period showed more signs of French Neoclassicism.
