A sensational and large scale Italian 19th century white Carrara marble statue of Colombo Giovinetto – The First Inspirations of a Young Christopher Columbus, signed by Giulio Monteverde, Roma. A young Columbus is seated, with his legs crossed, on a pier pillar with a front ring and the coat of arms of Genoa at the back, overlooking the Port of Genoa. Dressed in period attire with a cap and shoes. Wonderful expression on his face and attention to detail throughout. The sculpture was made in Rome and won a gold medal at an exhibition at Parma, Italy. The statue is raised by a square carved oak base. The square base with protruding corners has a central carved rosette, bordered by floral bands within a recessed panel. The top and bottom of the base has additional carved bands.
