A powerful and most handsome true pair of Italian 19th century Neo-Classical st. white Carrara marble statues of soldiers. Each soldier stands atop a stepped square pedestal with mottled edges displaying the armor of a fallen soldier, which is a sign of pride while reflecting victory. The soldiers are both grasping a staff held upside down with a plaque marked 'S.P.Q.R' (Senate of the people of Rome), a circular plaque with a female profile, and an eagle with expanded wings. Each soldier has their other hand atop a highly detailed urn while dressed in celebratory armor and with a sword on their hip. The soldiers stand on similarly designed staffs, shields, and quivers of arrows. This compelling scene depicts a celebration after the Punic Wars that occurred for a total of forty-three years on both land and sea between Rome and Carthage, with Rome coming out victorious in each battle.
The Roman eagle also called the 'Aquila", was the bird of Jupiter. In ancient times the eagle was a symbol of strength and courage, and immortality. The eagle was believed to be the king of the birds that could ascend above the storm, and become the messenger of the gods. — Read Less
