A striking and very high quality true pair of French 19th century ormolu and Sienna marble statues. Each statue is raised by its original rectangular Sienna marble base where the knights above are standing. One handsome knight is yielding a sword while wearing sandals, a helmet, and draped in a cloak with a shield on his arm while the other is holding a spear with his sword at his waist with a flowing helmet and also wearing a finely detailed shield on his arm.
Bertrand du Guesclin (1320 - 1380), nicknamed "The Eagle of Brittany", was a Breton knight and an important military commander on the French side during the Hundred Years' War. From 1370 to his death, he was Constable of France for King Charles V. Well known for his Fabian strategy, he took part in six pitched battles and won the four in which he held command.
Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard (1476 - 1524) was a French knight and commander at the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, generally known as the Chevalier de Bayard. Throughout the centuries since his death, he has been known as "the knight without fear and beyond reproach" (le chevalier sans peur et sans reproche).
