A striking and high quality true pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Belle Époque period patinated bronze, ormolu, Rouge Griotte, and black Belgian marble busts attributed to Ferdinand Barbedienne. The busts depict the Greek god Bacchus to the left and the Greek goddess Ariadne to the right. Each are raised by a square black Belgian marble base with elegant cut concave corners and a beautiful circular fluted Rouge Griotte marble supports with finely mottled plinths. At the center is a mottled ormolu socle shaped pedestal support with the striking wonderfully executed patinated bronze busts of Bacchus and Ariadne above with exceptional attention to detail and richly chased grape leaf and grape cluster ormolu accents in their hair.
Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810 – 1892), a renowned French Bronzier. Between 1850 and 1854 his firm, Barbedienne, provided furnishings in the Renaissance Revival style for the Hôtel de Ville, Paris. They received numerous medals at the International Exhibitions, including medals in three different classes at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London. — Read Less
