A spectacular and very high quality Russian early 19th century 1st Empire period Mahogany and ormolu bureau à cylindre desk. The four door seventeen drawer desk is raised by fine square tapered feet with fitted fluted ormolu plaques. At the center are three long drawers showcasing the beautiful Mahogany wood grain with elegant mottled pulls and keyhole escutcheons framed within a wrap around ormolu band. The roll top is decorated in a similar manner, flanked by fitted fluted ormolu plaques and fine circular reserves, and folds back to reveal twelve smaller drawers with fine ormolu pulls, two central doors, and a pullout writing surface retaining its original gold tooled leather top. The striking top displays an impressive architectural design with two drawers and two accordion type doors that open to reveal letter organizers below the most decorative stepped top with beautiful urn shaped finials and a finely pierced gallery.
