An exceptional and rare pair of French 18th century Louis XVI period giltwood thermometers and barometers, dated 1779. Each display an elegant bottom berried laurel wreath with a fine tied ribbon design. The central faces display their original writing and glass pane framed within a berried laurel band. Leading up the center of each is a fitted Réaumur scale thermometers with elegant tied ribbons and finely beaded border. The tops are decorated with charming foliate designs.
The Réaumur Scale is a temperature scale for which the freezing and boiling points of water are defined as 0 to 80 degrees respectively. The scale is named for René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur, who first proposed a similar scale in 1730. — Read Less
