An outstanding and high quality true pair of Italian 19th century Neo-Classical st. Grand Tour period ormolu, black Belgian and Rouge Royal marble columns with busts, stamped G S. Each decorative column is raised by square black Belgian marble bases with a stepped design and fine ormolu bottom bands. The central Rouge Royal supports each display most elegant lightly tapered shapes and mottled ormolu plinths and capitals. Above the square black Belgian marble supports are richly chased ormolu busts of the lovers Bacchus and Ariadne. Each are raised by fine socle shaped supports and display richly chased details.
The story of Ariadne and Bacchus: Ariadne has been left on the island of Naxos, deserted by her lover Theseus. She is discovered on the shore by Bacchus, the god of wine, who falls in love with her at first sight.Bacchus promises the entire sky to Ariadne where she then would become the constellation, Corona Borealis.
