A beautiful and high quality pair of French 19th century Belle Époque period Neo-Greek st. Ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble urns. Each stunning urn/'Hydria' is raised by a circular Ormolu socle with intricate scrolling patterns and supported on a square Rouge Griotte marble base. A 'Hydria' derives its name from the Greek word for water and is primarily a pot for fetching water. The baluster shaped marble body is held at its base by a scrolling foliate designed Ormolu support and a scrolling foliate patterned Ormolu band around the shoulder. The Ormolu band around the shoulder supports the handles on either side which display scrolled handle bases with swan heads. The necks of the swans come together to form the solid bodies of the scrolling handles that attach to the upper Ormolu rim of the urn and display a Coeur-de-Rai pattern. — Read Less
