A handsome and high quality French mid 19th century Renaissance st. patinated bronze and ormolu tazza signed by Émile Louis Picault and dated 1863. The tazza is raised by a striking tripod base and elegantly scrolled supports with handsome paw feet and impressive richly chased lion heads amidst acanthus leaves centering the mottled central support. The circular top displays a central plaque depicting a charming mythological scene with the inscription "Olympias XCI Graeci Syracusis Captivi" framed within a mottled ormolu band. All original patina and gilt throughout.
Émile Louis Picault (1833-1915) was a renowned French Bronzier. Picault studied with Henri Royer and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1863 and 1914. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Troyes Museum in Paris and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chambery. He was a prolific French Orientalist sculptor known for his bronzes depicting allegorical and mythological scenes. — Read Less
