A highly detailed and most elegant French early 19th century Louis XVI st. Ormolu and ebonized Fruitwood Boulle Marquetry cabinet/trunk. This impressive rectangular trunk is raised by four Ormolu boar's heads below each corner. The base is designed with parallel gilded straight bands and a Coeur-de-Rai band above. All four sides are edged with Boulle marquetry and Ormolu palmette pendants in each corner. The front panel is accented with a wonderful foliate decorated keyhole escutcheon with a pierced and scroll decorated key. The top is decorated in a similar fashion with its Boulle edges and Coeur-de-Rai band while the corners are joined by Ormolu male profiles with scalloped and foliate decorations. All four panels, as well as the top depict 'The Battle of Valenciennes' which was fought on the 16th of July 1656 between the Spanish troops commanded by John Joseph of Austria and the French troops under Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne, in the outskirts of the city of Valenciennes in the Spanish Netherlands during the Franco-Spanish War. The interior of this tastefully decorated trunk is lined with cream colored upholstery and edged with Coeur-de-Rai Ormolu bands along the edges. The top opens with its original pierced Ormolu hinges that contain exquisite etched designs throughout. — Read Less
