A remarkable and extremely high quality French early 19th century 1st Empire period ormolu clock. The clock is raised by a square base with fine bun feet and an elegant wrap around mottled border. The socle shaped pedestal support displays lovely richly chased wrap around foliate and reeded bands with delicate hammered details below finely detailed palmettes and water flora encasing the body. The beautiful baluster shaped body displays the white enameled clock face at the center with Roman hour markings, Arabic minute markings and fine pierced foliate ormolu hands all framed within a mottled bezel with most decorative foliate designs. At the back is an opening revealing the inside which retains its original silk threaded movement and is dated 1809. At each side are beautiful lightly curved fluted arms leading to a charming wonderfully executed winged cherub, likely Cupid, at the left and a beautiful intricately detailed winged maiden, likely Psyche, draped in a fine flowing garment. She is helping him sharpen his arrow turning the grindstone and pouring water from a vessel to keep it wet. Wonderful attention to detail and stunning satin and burnished finish throughout. All original gilt throughout. — Read Less
