A stunning French 19th century patinated Bronze, Ormolu and Black Belgian marble statue of Hebe and the Eagle of Jupiter, signed C. Buhot. The statue is raised on a circular black Belgian marble base with a finely chased Ormolu band depicting youthful cherubs playing musical instruments and frivolity. All original gilt and patina throughout.
Hebe, is the Roman goddess of youth. She is the daughter of Zeus and Hera. Hebe was the cup bearer for the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus, serving them nectar and ambrosia. She was supposed to have the power to give eternal youth, and in art is typically seen with her father in the guise of an eagle, often offering a cup to him This depiction is seen in classical art and relates to a belief that the eagle (like the phoenix) had the ability to renew itself to a youthful state.
Louis-Charles-Hippolyte Buhot (1815-1865) was a pupil of David d'Angers. Buhot attended l’École des Beaux Arts at seventeen. A regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1837 until the year he died when he exhibited the original plaster of this statue. — Read Less
