A handsome and richly detailed French 19th century Neo-Classical st. patinated Bronze and Ormolu statue of Aeneas and Anchises. This wonderful statue after a model by Pierre Lepautre and Francois Girardon, is raised on a scrolled and pierced Ormolu base with a central palmette reserve. The bronze statue depicts a scene from the Aeneid showing the Trojan hero Aeneas leading his family out of Troy after its defeat. Aeneas is dressed in armor and carries his father Anchises in his arms, while his son Ascanius walks behind him. Aeneas is the son of Anchises and the Goddess Venus, while also being the legendary founder of Rome. This statue is based on a marble sculpture by Pierre Lepautre begun in 1697, placed at the Château de Marly, later moved to the Tuileries, and today in the collection of the Louvre. — Read Less
