Chapuis was born in Brussels and trained in Paris, where he became a master Ébéniste entitling him to use a personal estampille - mark, on his work. Furniture by Jean-Joseph Chapuis are rarely found in collections outside France. Pieces of his collection can be viewed at The museum of Vleeshuis in Antwerp and the museum of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode in Belgium.
