An impressive and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. Ormolu and Baccarat Crystal chandelier, after the model by Pierre Gouthière for Marie Antoinette. This truly gorgeous six light chandelier is centered by a berried acorn bottom finial hanging below an acanthus leaf spray that introduces the fluted central fut. Above the acanthus leaf spray are the six 'S' scrolled arms decorated with acanthus leaves and acorn finials below each arm leading to circular bobeches with dentil patterned edges. Above each bobeche are the berried foliate and fluted candle cups. Each arm is decorated by prism cut pendants around each bobeche and scalloped pendants hanging below each arm. Connecting each arm are swaging Crystal garlands with additional scalloped Crystal pendants. Seated on the bases of each arm are three cherubs playing instruments with foliate decorated crossing legs. Surpassing the central reserve of the fluted central fut is the foliate decorated top crown with additional scalloped pendants hanging below. Above the palmette designs at the top of the fut is the pierced scrolling foliate canopy that contains swaging Crystal garlands which connect to the swaging garlands attaching each arm below.
The original model for this Chandelier was designed by Pierre Gouthière for Le Cabinet Doré in Marie-Antoinette’s private apartments at the Palace of Versailles, where it remains to this day. A design for the chandelier by Gouthière survives in the collections of the Museé des Arts Décoratifs.

In 1764 King Louis XV of France gave permission to found a glassworks in the town of Baccarat. Production consisted of window panes, mirrors and stemware until 1816 when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time over 3000 workers were employed at the site.
Baccarat was famous and requested by many royal houses and received its first royal commission in 1823. This began a lengthy line of commissions for royalty and heads of state throughout the world. In 1855 Baccarat won its first gold medal at the Worlds Fair in Paris after which they began to mark their creations towards the end of the 19th century.
