An exceptional and unique French 19th century Louis XVI st. ormolu and Baccarat crystal chandelier. The eight arm chandelier is centered by a beautiful solid crystal ball pendant below a fine foliate ormolu finial surrounded by lovely faceted cut crystal pendants. The elegantly scrolled arms are each adorned with a stunning array of kite and teardrop shaped cut crystal pendants with unique and extremely decorative faceted crystal balls leading to fine fluted designs, beaded bobeches and fluted mottled candle cups. The cage displays an exceptional most decorative scrolled design centering a beautiful tied fabric like central design below additional scrolled designs and striking sprays also decorated with an exceptional array of outstanding cut crystal pendants. Four crystal garlands lead upwards centering an additional tied fabric like support leading to a remarkable ribbon tied in a lovely bow. — Read Less

In 1764 King Louis XV of France gave permission to found a glassworks in the town of Baccarat. Production consisted of window panes, mirrors and stemware until 1816 when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time over 3000 workers were employed at the site.
Baccarat was famous and requested by many royal houses and received its first royal commission in 1823. This began a lengthy line of commissions for royalty and heads of state throughout the world. In 1855 Baccarat won its first gold medal at the Worlds Fair in Paris after which they began to mark their creations towards the end of the 19th century.
