An exquisite and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. Baccarat Crystal plafonnier chandelier. This truly stunning five light plafonnier is centered by a circular band of hanging prism cut Baccarat Crystals. Growing larger in width are the three circular bands of hanging prism cut Baccarat crystals, each one larger than the previous band. These beautiful bands lead upward to the patinated beaded Iron frame that surrounds the five interior lights. Atop the patinated Iron frame is an inverted bowl shaped Baccarat Crystal dome decorated with lattice cuts and palmette designs along the edge. Following the central fut above the inverted Crystal bowl is a Baccarat Crystal sphere shaped reserve decorated with lattice cuts. Above the circular reserve is the lovely bowl shaped top crown which is decorated with additional lattice cuts, palmette designs along the edge, and hanging prism cut Crystals. — Read Less

In 1764 King Louis XV of France gave permission to found a glassworks in the town of Baccarat. Production consisted of window panes, mirrors and stemware until 1816 when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time over 3000 workers were employed at the site.
Baccarat was famous and requested by many royal houses and received its first royal commission in 1823. This began a lengthy line of commissions for royalty and heads of state throughout the world. In 1855 Baccarat won its first gold medal at the Worlds Fair in Paris after which they began to mark their creations towards the end of the 19th century.
