An elegant and very high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. Baccarat crystal and ormolu chandelier. The six arm Marie Antoinette chandelier is centered by a beautiful solid crystal ball below the striking bottom support encased in a most decorative mottled crystal reserve. The elegantly scrolled arms branch out from a ball shaped reserve and are adorned with richly chased acanthus leaves leading to lovely reeded and fluted bobeches and mottled candle cups connected by superb swaging crystal garlands. Delicate crystal chains lead up from each arm to a remarkable decorative tier with fine rosettes centering the exquisite central fut also encased within mottled Baccarat crystal reserves. The impressive top crown is adorned with additional crystal pendants with exceptional finely detailed wheat spring sprays. All original gilt throughout. — Read Less

In 1764 King Louis XV of France gave permission to found a glassworks in the town of Baccarat. Production consisted of window panes, mirrors and stemware until 1816 when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time over 3000 workers were employed at the site.
Baccarat was famous and requested by many royal houses and received its first royal commission in 1823. This began a lengthy line of commissions for royalty and heads of state throughout the world. In 1855 Baccarat won its first gold medal at the Worlds Fair in Paris after which they began to mark their creations towards the end of the 19th century.
