An absolutely stunning and monumentally scaled French 19th century Louis XV st. Ormolu and Baccarat Crystal chandelier. This grand scaled thirty-five arm thirty-nine light chandelier with a striking mottled Crystal central fut is centered by a crystal ball bottom finial with light lattice cuts hanging from the base of the central fut. The base of the mottled Crystal central fut is the first tier where half of the scrolling Ormolu arms initiate. Hanging from each of the arms are scallop shaped Crystal pendants. There are intermittent Crystal daggers at the peak inner arms in the bottom tier as well as with Ormolu sprays containing additional smaller scale Crystal pendants. Moving upward on the mottled Crystal fut is another tier which introduces additional scrolling Ormolu arms with similar decorations as the tier below with their scallop shaped Crystal pendants and intermittent arms displaying daggers. There are additional Ormolu bands which wander upwards to form a spacious cage. At the top of the cage are fine curving Ormolu bands with rosette cut Crystals and additional scallop shaped Crystal pendants. The top crown of this grand chandelier contains an Ormolu bowl with a sunburst design around the base and wandering Ormolu bands attached to its top rim. The Ormolu bands are tastefully decorated with additional rosette cut Crystals and scallop shaped pendants.

In 1764 King Louis XV of France gave permission to found a glassworks in the town of Baccarat. Production consisted of window panes, mirrors and stemware until 1816 when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time over 3000 workers were employed at the site.
Baccarat was famous and requested by many royal houses and received its first royal commission in 1823. This began a lengthy line of commissions for royalty and heads of state throughout the world. In 1855 Baccarat won its first gold medal at the Worlds Fair in Paris after which they began to mark their creations towards the end of the 19th century.
