A beautiful and very high quality French 19th century Empire st. ormolu and Baccarat crystal chandelier. The twelve arm sixteen light chandelier is centered by a striking solid crystal ball below the lovely mottled foliate ormolu support with three beautiful tiers of most decorative prism and baguette shaped crystal pendants. The central tier displays a wonderful pierced richly chased wrap around band displaying masks with quivers and the eternal flame, and striking swans flanked by cornucopias. The elegantly scrolled arms branch out from a fine palmette designed mottled band and display elegant scrolled foliate accents leading to a unique fish scale like design at the underside of the bobeches and striking facetted crystal saucers. At the center are four additional light bulbs illuminating the interior and emitting a wonderful warm glow. Lightly curved swaging cut facetted crystal garlands lead upwards to the elegant top crown with superb pierced ormolu palmettes and additional most decorative baguette shaped cut crystal pendants.

In 1764 King Louis XV of France gave permission to found a glassworks in the town of Baccarat. Production consisted of window panes, mirrors and stemware until 1816 when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time over 3000 workers were employed at the site.
Baccarat was famous and requested by many royal houses and received its first royal commission in 1823. This began a lengthy line of commissions for royalty and heads of state throughout the world. In 1855 Baccarat won its first gold medal at the Worlds Fair in Paris after which they began to mark their creations towards the end of the 19th century.
