A beautiful and high quality Italian 19th century white Carrara marble statue of Hebe. The statue is raised by a circular base where the beautiful Hebe is standing barefoot in front of a tree trunk. She is wearing her hair in an updo and is draped in a wonderfully executed flowing garment with a carafe in one hand and a cup in the other.
Hebe is the Roman goddess of youth. She is the daughter of Zeus and Hera. Hebe was the cupbearer for the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus, serving them nectar and ambrosia. She was supposed to have the power to give eternal youth, and in art is typically seen with her father in the guise of an eagle, often offering a cup to him. This depiction is seen in classical art and relates to a belief that the eagle (like the phoenix) had the ability to renew itself to a youthful state.
