  • (Régence st.) - Regence, also known as Regency, was the period in French history when Louis XV was still a minor and unable to take full control of the country. This restrained style occurred during the first 30 years of the 1700s and was directed by Philippe II, regent of France. During this period, France evolved from the large and self-important court of Louis XIV and began moving away from such formality. The petit salon was now the ideal location for entertaining, so furniture needed to be elegant, highly crafted, but easily movable. Even the Chateau de Versailles which represented the almighty French court, now saw larger rooms being divided into more intimate spaces.
