A stunning French early 19th century Neo-Classical st. black Belgian marble and ormolu clock, stamped ARERA, circa 1830. The clock is raised by striking finely detailed ormolu supports with dolphins amidst beautiful scrolled movements and palmettes. An impressive and richly chased acanthus leaf designed ormolu band extends along the base with elegant scrolled foliate mounts at the corners. Above an exceptionally well executed and finely detailed Greek philosopher is wearing a fine flowing period garment and a berried laurel wreath in his hair, all in a stunning satin and burnished finish. He is looking up in the air in thought with a quill in his right hand and open scrolls with an inkwell at his writing table. The table which houses the clock displays striking richly chased birds at each side with paw feet supports. The enameled clock face displays fine Roman numerals, a unique second hand, pierced clover shaped minute and hour hands and the writing ARERA Rue Du Roi À Paris all framed within a berried laurel band. To the right side is a charming basket full of rolled up scrolls. All original gilt throughout. — Read Less
