This finely detailed bronze representation of the original marble sculpture is based on the myth of Dirce. As greek mythology states, Dirce was tied to a bull by the son’s of Antiope as revenge for the horrible treatment their mother endured at the hand of Dirce. The statue depicts the two brothers Amphion and Zethus tying Dirce to the bull while their mother Antiope stands behind.
The original group was unearthed in 1546 during the excavations of the gymnasium of the Roman Baths of Caracalla. It is a massive Roman copy of a Hellenistic sculpture which happens to be the largest single sculpture recovered from antiquity. The Farnese Bull was formerly in the Farnese collection in Rome.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”53131,53132,53133,53130,53138,53140,53135,53137,53134,53129,53136″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
