A sensational and extremely high quality Italian 19th century white Carrara marble statue of a young girl knitting, signed Ugo Zannoni, Milano 1882. The charming statue is raised by a circular mottled base with a fine wrap around mottled border and a ground like design. The beautiful young girl is sitting on a swivel stool with baluster shaped legs with ball feet and the exceptional finely sculpted mechanism visible below and an intricately detailed cushion. She sits with her legs crossed, wearing a wonderfully executed flowing gown, which is falling off her shoulders and displays an intricately sculpted lace border. Her finely detailed hair is tied back with a band exposing her pearl earrings and she is reading a book that rests on her knee while she knits with her metal knitting needles. Superb proportions and exceptional attention to detail throughout.

Ugo Zannoni (1836-1919) Born in Verona, was a renowned sculptor and painter. After an apprenticeship in the workshop of Grazioso Spazzi, he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, and finally to the Brera Academy. In 1865, he created the statue of Dante Alighieri, situated in Piazza dei Signori in Verona. He opened a studio in Milan and achieved great success at the exhibition of 1872, and was appointed Knight of the Crown by Vittorio Emanuele II. In 1883, he became the Director of the Brera Academy. — Read Less
