A handsome pair of French 19th century Grand Tour Period Louis XVI st. Sienna marble, Ormolu and patinated Bronze Warwick vases. The pair of urns are raised by square bases which are elevated on circular topie shaped supports decorated by acanthus leaves. Above are corner protruding blocks with square Ormolu rosettes flanking a pierced Ormolu band with diamond shaped rosettes. A cylindrical marble plinth decorated by a beaded band raises the patinated Bronze Warwick vase. The patinated bronze body displays richly chased Bacchic figures below the most decorative intertwining leaf and grape cluster rim with beaded and Les Oves patterns. Each side has magnificent intertwined handles with a fluted pattern. Also finished on the inside.
The Warwick Vase is an ancient Roman vase with Bacchic ornament that was discovered at Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli about 1771 by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish painter-antiquarian and art dealer in Rome. It was restored by order of Sir William Hamilton and passed into the collection of his nephew, George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick. — Read Less
