A most elegant and large scaled French 19th century Louis XVI st. Baccarat Crystal and Ormolu chandelier. This truly stunning twelve arm fifteen light chandelier is centered by a finely cut spherical Crystal bottom finial which is located below an Ormolu socle that introduces the central fut. The socle holds numerous swaging Crystal garlands which lead and attach to the circular frame above that is tastefully decorated with Crystals and Ormolu rosettes. The frame supports the twelve 'S' scrolled Crystal arms that are accented with tear drop cut Crystal pendants hanging from the intricately patterned circular bobeches and attractive lattice cut candle cups. Flanking the tapered and lattice patterned Crystal encased central fut, with its central reserve of an Ormolu foliate spray, are additional swaging Crystal garlands that attach to each candle cup and meet at the top crown. The wonderful top crown contains a spray of Ormolu water flora that are decorated with hanging tear drop cut Crystal pendants. — Read Less

In 1764 King Louis XV of France gave permission to found a glassworks in the town of Baccarat. Production consisted of window panes, mirrors and stemware until 1816 when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time over 3000 workers were employed at the site.
Baccarat was famous and requested by many royal houses and received its first royal commission in 1823. This began a lengthy line of commissions for royalty and heads of state throughout the world. In 1855 Baccarat won its first gold medal at the Worlds Fair in Paris after which they began to mark their creations towards the end of the 19th century.
